Hybrid Camellias Hybrid Camellias are those having two or more species (usually Japonica mixed with other species) in their parente. Both flower and growth habit will vary depending upon species involved. To help identify the various parentages the following code used: R- Reticulata Hybrid. These usually produce large to very large blossoms on vigorous, open growing plants. S- Saluensis Hybrid. Although these vary greatly in growth habit, reanging from very compact to open and leggy, Saluenensis hybrids characteristically are small-leafed, Sasanqua-like plants that produce small to medium flowers, are very profuse, and tend to set buds even when young. Many are reputed to be cold hardy. SP- These are actually Pitardii hybrids, but their overall appearance and performance are that of Saluenensis hybrids. 5.99 Sc

Wabisuke Camellias The Wabisuke (pronounced "wa-bis-kay") Camellias of Japan, although Japonica-like in general appearance, are thought to be of hybrid origin. Generally, the plants are small to medium leafed and rather shrubby. The flowers are tubular, single and small. Curiously, most have stamens without, or with very few, pollen sacs (anther). Camellias For Foliages There are a number of Camellias that are as attractive, if not more so, for their leaf patterns amid growth habits as they are for their flowers. Any of the following would add interest to any Camellia collection. (You will note the use of the word "Benten" on several varieties. This word has been used in Japan to indicated a variety on which the leaf is darker in the center and bordered by a lighter margin. We have decided to continue this tradition with such varieties developed in this country as well). "J" indicates Japonica; "S" Sasanqua.
