Holiday Avocado Tree

Holiday is an awesome plant. I have been watching Holiday grow in its popularity for the last 5 years. It is compact tree, reaching about  12 feet without pruning, kept smaller with some pinching of growth. Holiday produces excellent Hass like fruit, during, well surprise the Holiday Season in the early winter. Perfect timing for holiday season cooking.

Holiday can produce fruit indoors. Make sure there is some intense lighting with good 12 hour "days." (just put the lights on a timer) Holiday should be planted into a container of at least 30" inches wide by 24" deep. Soil should be very sandy with about 50% organic matter or mulch.

Dwarf tree has very large fruit. Beautiful tree with spreading, umbrella shape that skirts the ground. Not extremely small, but certainly not a towering tree. Tree is smaller than Wertz. Fruit are attractive and have good flavor. Released from the breeding program for nursery propagation in 2001.

Variables include distance from California to you, current plant growth height and soil mixes. Based upon our experience this what you should expect to billed for after your order is packed. Shipping charges for potted plants are not typically billed until after the shipment has been prepared for shipment. The base fee of $9.99 is used a credit towards any shipping charges that you may owe. We ship large healthy plants, we make ever effort to make sure that the cargo is as light as possible.

Custom wood crating is $28.00 per hour for plus materials.

Shipments to residential locations are charged an extra fee by UPS, Fed Ex Ground and DHL  $2.50 to $3.50. On multiple plant shipments you will save a lot by having the shipments sent to primary business location in care of yourself.

Costs of shipping plants can vary by several dollars depending upon weather, current potting soil mixes used. You are billed the cost of your freight plus the cost of packing your order. Packing costs are fixed, freight costs are subject to the final bill from the carrier that brought your plants or merchandise to you.

Nearly all of our ground cargo is routed though Salt Lake City, Columbus Ohio or Chicago.  Check Accuweather.com for the latest in weather.

We typically ship fruit trees Monday through Friday. We can ship "urgent orders" right away if requested.

Potted fruit trees typically cannot travel "Next Day Air or 2nd Day Air." The plants we ship are large 5 gallon filled out bushes and trees. The boxes range in height from 3 feet to 6 feet and would cost upwards of $150.00 to $200.00 to send Next Day Air or 2nd Day Air.

Don Gillogly vs Holiday

We grow many other avocado plants and look forward to growing this Don Gillogly, if it is the real deal. Right now we simply procure it in the market place and make it available in a quality potted plant size.  Being a native of Santa Barbara, CA I have been growing Avocado trees off and on since 1983 and have a long history with this fruit. Roots, Roots & Roots nothing is more important to a quality long lived Avo tree than the roots.

But some controversy may be in the making here. I see on the internet that started seedlings are sold for $30 and $40. The first problem with this is Avocado trees normally have very poor root systems. Millions of dollars have been spent to find disease resistant root stocks and there are many. It takes about 12 to 18 months to get a grafted Avocado tree to decent size, and that is with green house production and a lot of over sight.

Consumers are being ask to pay $30 to $40.00 for plant that should take at least 2 years to produce fruit under ideal circumstances, and most likely 3 to 4 and ignore all of the history of rooting and root stock issues with Avocado trees. This seems are bit too much to believe.

Why would Roger's Gardens hype this plant so much? Rogers Gardens is located in Newport Beach, CA. It is among the most expensive places to buy the same thing "next door" there is. Having been there many times I will tell you, it is beautiful. But do your really need to pay 2 and 3 times over "retail" to get a plant that was grown by the same grower selling it at nursery down the street for 1/2 the price? I think not. The fact is they need a Draw item, Don Gillogly is a good draw item.

Rogers is locked into the battle Royal with Armstrong Garden Centers. Having sold our products to Armstrong for about 6 years and Rogers for a couple of years I was privy to watching and listening to the two battle it out. My best guess as to why Rogers would so over hype this plant is Armstrong also came out with their "own" premium avocado tree, Holiday.

I first saw Holiday about 5 years ago as it was introduced at Armstrong, and it was and is a beauty. Holiday has also been subjected to peer review, my understanding is that Don Gillogly has not been submitted for peer review. We are searching for more information on this and will post what we find. If Armstrong gets a hot item, Roger's had better work hard to it own hot item. Until recently Holiday was an Armstrong exclusive. Now its on the open market.

Holiday is grafted Avocado tree on strong disease resistant root stock. It is natural compact grower, with a proven peer review record and proven back yard production history. Until further published research is available we strong urge you get Holiday.

11-3-04, Chris
