Hybrid Tea Rose Info Page

Referred to as "Large-flowered Roses" in Europe, Hybrid Teas are a result of crossing Hybrid Perpetuals with Tea roses. The idea was to capture the hardiness and strong fragrance of the Hybrid Perpetual and pair it with the repeating habit and color range of the Tea. La France is generally considered the first "official" Hybrid Tea in 1867, though the classification did not appear until 1880. Since then, there have been zillions of Hybrid Teas raised, producing some of the most popular roses of the 20th century.

The main weaknesses of these lovelies lie with their questionable winter hardiness at high elevations and their bud union (that knob found on the trunk of the plant). The bud union, or graft, is the point where the rose your purchase was surgically joined in youth to a different rose with a vigorous root system. A burial to where the bud union is 3-4" below the soil line increases their success in Colorado climates. Average height is 3-5+'.
